If it clears the Network folks, "New Girl" is going to be used as music for a backstory on one of the New York auditioners. Cool huh!?

Monterey Live & Other highlights

To read this blog WITH the related photos, go to: www.myspace.com/rebeccasayre

Ahhhh”¦ I had a really wonderful time during the last week playing for friends and in new venues! I feel so grateful to the hosts who were kind enough to have me in their home to play and stay, and brave enough to invite all their friends and neighbors to come over! Thank you hosts! Through each of these performances, the tunes are getting stronger, feeling more settled into their own little grooves. I used to think the songs were "done" as soon as I/we finished writing them, but I've learned that they need a little play time. Don't we all? Yes, a little play time to decide how they want to be performed. Several tunes are becoming favorites among enthusiastic new fans. I played "Bittersweet Day" at the Carmel Valley house concert the other night and the audience wanted to know "Who is this Eddie guy and what about you two”¦.?" and "whatever happened with the guy in 'Bareback Promenade'”¦?" I assured them that Eddie and I have known each other for many years and are happily heads-hearts-and-heels in-friendship and that they'd get the rest of the "Bareback" story in the 2nd set when I played "Something Like the Sun." One thing I like about playing house concerts is the animals that get involved. The house dog, "Sadie" didn't know whom to go to when 20 people in the room were snapping their fingers to "Great Days". That was hilarious.

I played at Monterey Live the other night and--based on the crowd's and the owner's response--looks like I'll be able to play there again in the future. J I split the night with a kind and very talented songwriter named Andrew Heringer, who loaned me his photographer, Alex Dita (blossoming film maker) for the evening, to shoot some photos so I could share them with you guys. Pictures are so informative, I find. They tell you how to dress, what color lipstick to wear, and how to where your hair.

Oh, and I got the video and pics from the "New Girl" CD Release party in the mail today (thank you Jules Delgado) so I'll be working on getting those edited for the sites. Lots of good stuff in there!

The weather here in Big Sur has been absolutely--though somewhat unseasonably--warm and beautiful. The folks and I made a quick trip to the windy beach after lunch, and even with sand in our teeth, we were happy! Tomorrow I'll head down to San Luis Obispo ("SLO") for another concert at my swing dancing sister, Sally's, then on down to Alta Dena.

Thank you all for your friendship and support, for hosting or attending, for taking a chance on a new act, for clapping, smiling or just wagging your tails.

Rebecca

A Happy Birthday

"Hey Mom, it’s my birthday!!” I hear that song in my head... but she didn't forget. In fact, there was a birthday card at my place on the dining room table waiting for me this morning”¦. I realized this after I got through half a cup of coffee and saw it out of the corner of my eye. Among other complimentary adjectives, the card said “”¦you are amazing and amusing”. I’m glad I’m not merely amusing. Kinda reminds me of what my grandma used to say: “Make yourself useful, as well as, ornamental!” as she assigned one of us grandchildren some house chore like taking out the compost or setting the table. I imagined a useless and strictly ornamental houseful of grandchildren arrogantly displaying themselves while lounging Cleopatra-style on a velvet couch. Yeah, right.

It’s kinda nice to be with family for my birthday. It’s been years since I celebrated a birthday with Mom & Dad. My generous birthday gift is a massage with Mary Beth, our friend and neighbor. Massage is a luxury I’m not normally inclined to indulge in, so that will be a nice follow-up to my hike up the Ventana fire road today. I started up there on Sunday, but after about a mile, I realized I was going to need water, and lots of it, in order to continue up the hill. I saw burnt redwood and oak trees and the remaining stone foundation of one of their vacation rentals. Kinda eerie. But it was—in every other conceivable way—a glorious day in Big Sur. It rained on Sunday, so the sky was clear, the air crisp and chilly, the view breathtaking. I could actually say that there was no place I’d rather be and mused over how often one can claim that. That’s a good day. Today, I’m going to take dad’s camera with me and get a few pics to share.

Well, the folks are at Yoga (mom teaches, dad takes) so I have a little less than 30 minutes left to get in all my online activity before they return and want to check their email. We’re on dial-up out here so that means slow AND exclusive use. Tomorrow, I head toward Santa Cruz—where I used to go to the beach when I’d cut school on nice days—and then onto San Jose, then back to Monterey and Carmel. I feel incredibly blessed to be in this part of the world”¦. I was going to say “this time of year”, but I actually feel blessed any time I have the good fortune of visiting my folks and their friends in these beautiful places. I feel especially lucky that my folks and several of these friends have decided to host concerts for me!

OK, the sunshine is calling! More later.
Rebecca

Accompanying photos are on my MySpace blog for today. www.myspace.com/rebeccasayre

Hey y'all!
I've been so engrossed in this business of Music recently, that I've neglected to tell you guys what's going on! Oh, and I planted a new bed out front, too. Sometimes I gotta get off the 'puter and go out in to the garden for some Sunshine Therapy! I find gardening is cheaper than the traditional kind and far more effective and too. I can see a lot of you there already! I'm so honored and thrilled to have playing with me, Pat, Charlie, and Roy, too. And if you have yet to meet my illusive and mysterious co-writer, Eddie will be there too. The next day, I leave for a month in California for a bunch of shows. Yeah, and it's a whole lot warmer out there. Did I mention, I'm really fond of the SUNSHINE!

Come say "hey", "happy birthday" (yeah, mine's Nov 11th) or just come sing along to my "New Girl" tunes and celebrate with me!
Warmly,
Rebecca

Hello Friends,
Yes, finally! I have completed the 5 tunes on "New Girl" with tender care and several pairs of good ears! These songs are like my children, well, Eddie’s & mine. I've given birth to them, nurtured them, surrounded them with the best musicians in the world, and in some cases, lay them in a bed of sweet background vocals, if I do say so myself! I've watched them go through their growing pains, introduced them to new friends and now that they are standing quite capably on their own, it's like putting them on the bus for their first day of school! But I am very excited because I know that they will make lots of new friends, and touch your ears and hearts.

Sincerely,

Rebecca

Appalachian Trail Hiking

Still up in Blacksburg Virginia: Yesterday morning, my brother John mapped out a hike to “Dragon’s Tooth” on the Appalachian Trail. We drove for about 45 minutes to the trail head, on a 2-lane country road lined with horse farms and green hay fields. I gotta get a horse”¦ I really do miss those animals. John had said the hike was 5-miles round trip and that it would be steep, but I didn’t hear the “hands-and-knees-climbing over rocks” part! At about the 1.5 mile point, I was sucking wind pretty hard and getting really thirsty! I was concerned about running out of water since I was already a little dehydrated from the Mexican food and Margaritas we’d treated ourselves to the night before. But at last, we made it to the top, resting legs and lungs while we took in the beautiful, panoramic view and munched on apple slices. Only had my cell phone to take photos!

After our arduous hike, we decided on the drive back that we would treat ourselves to ice cream (cherry vanilla which really hit the spot!) and a movie. The house was still warm, but it had cooled off very nicely outside by 8:30 or so. We took a walk to take in some of that cool air and ended up on the golf course just above the house. Black pine trees popped out of the black hilltop in front of us and were silhouetted on a red sky. We sat there in the perfect evening temperature and picked out shapes in the clouds”¦ the guy with the bushy eyebrows and handle-bar mustache, the upside down lady’s face, the cowboy about to throw his lariat.. the snail that became a turtle. It was a peaceful completion to a full day. One of those days that has the power to quiet that ambitious voice in your head—however temporarily—that says you “should be” doing something more productive. I got some great exercise, saw some beautiful scenery and enjoyed it all with my brother and we didn’t even get on each other’s nerves. Now that’s time well spent!

Pretty good with a hammer....

Hey guys! Thanks for checking in. I often think of clever little blog entries to write while I'm out watering the garden or walking around Radnor lake, then I loose the bug by the time I'm back at the computer. Anyway, Charlie & I mixed our final mixes for the "New Girl" EP and now I'm up in Blacksburg, VA (where Virginia Tech is) visiting and now working a bit for my brother, John. John's wife Barbara is visiting her home country of Austria and while John is solo, I decided to come visit and he promptly decided that he could use my help (more on that later).

With less than a week's notice, my ambitious brother organized a neighborhood house concert for me last Saturday night which was a huge success! I did a couple sets for a delightfully attentive, engaged audience and then, about half of them stayed to jam and sing with John & I both on old Sam Cooke and Ray Charles tunes and Tennessee Waltz or whatever they picked out of John's enormous song book. My favorite is a Swiss folk tune that John sings and, yes, yodels! (as in "yodelay HEE HOO!") And these folks could really sing! It was almost like being in Nashville. Luckily I had a bunch of CDs with me and I sold 'em all! The favorites this trip are Bareback Promenade, I Miss Mississippi, New Girl and especially Bittersweet Day which isn't on the EP but will be on my full project to be recorded, hopefully, this Autumn”¦which brings me back to my brother John, who has a very active little home-improvement business. I learned a lot from him when he worked on my fixer in Sylvan Park, so, not only am I dodging the summer heat in Nashville, where my friends Liz & Sarah tell me it's hot as hell, I'm actually making money swinging a hammer! It's about 10 degrees cooler here, cooling off in the evenings, too. John and I are remodeling a bathroom for the neighbors down the street (the same guy who DJs at the local VT radio station and promoted our concert).

The "New Girl" EP is officially done (YAY!). I have only to master and mass produce it for YOU! Meanwhile my niece, Melanie, is going to show me how to use Photoshop tonight (yeah, I'm a quick study”¦ HA! I'm thinking I'll be mostly watching) while "we" design my album cover. By the way, Sarah tells me my garden is thriving with zucchini, yellow squash and cucumbers with a few cantaloupes & tomatoes coming in too!

Bye for now,

Rebecca
